Is it safe to give my dog Trazodone after Anipryl for dementia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 70 lbs

My dog stopped taking Anipryl 4 days ago. Now my vet wants me to give him trazodone tonight to try to treat his canine cognitive dementia. Everything I have read said to wait 2 weeks but she says that is not necessary. What is your opinion ? I am afraid of serotonin syndrome.

Hello. Most times you can give Anipryl along with Trazodone safely. On occasion, if the doses were/are high enough with both drugs, you might see serotonin syndrome. I am sure your veterinarian is quite aware of the doses used & is confident that Mitch will be fine. If you do see any unusual symptoms, agitation, muscle stiffness, distress, pacing, call your veterinarian. This is easily treated. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

The safest bet is to allow a washout period of about two weeks before starting a new medication that affects serotonin levels, such as tramadol or trazodone. However, in some cases the new medication can be started sooner if the need is urgent, under close supervision by your veterinarian. I would recommend talking to your regular vet about this if you are concerned that your dog needs to start the new meds ASAP.
