Boxer dog limping after play, wrist swollen. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 6 years and 5 months old | 65 lbs

My 6 year old Boxer dog suddenly developed a limp after playing. He would limp (staying off his front right leg) especially after playing, then resting, then trying to stand back up. He still plays daily, but then after he can barely walk. Thought maybe it was a strain and would go away, but it's only gotten worse. I noticed today his "wrist" on the leg he's babying looks different than the other. See attached photos. Trying to avoid huge vet bills. Any thoughts? Wrap it? NSAIDS?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear Lennox isn’t feeling well. I would recommend taking him in to a vet first. You don’t have to do a lot of diagnostics first if you want. They can prescribe a safe medication to give him that may help him recover. I would not give anything over the counter as most human medications are toxic to pets. I also wouldn’t wrap it because you could cause more damage. I would recommend rest for at least a week as well (no running, jumping, playing, or stairs). Good luck and kisses to Lennox!
