Is it safe to spay my dog after her heat? What are the side effects?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 7 months old

I will be getting Mini spayed next week after her 3rd heat cycle is finished.. Is it the good time? Also, I researched n found a lot of articles about the affects of getting a dog spayed.. like behavioural issues, urine leakage n urinary tract infections.. So, I need your opinion on this.. because I just want Mini to have a quality life

Not right after her heat cycle is finished, the surgery is too risky at that period because the blood vessels are very big and very fragile, it is recommended to wait 2 months after the heat cycle has finished. the possible side effects are absolutely worth it as the risk of her getting cancer if she is not spayed is very high and we are talking about a fatal disease.
