My dog's wound opened. Are dissolvable stitches safe for large dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 2 months old | 68 lbs

My dog had a large fatty lump removed from his back but after 3 days a stitch had burst, then got infected, when back for postop 2 days after stitch burst, we got Antibiotics which did nothing, in this time the wound opened more. Back 5 days later said we could swab to make sure right antibiotic and flushed it out and gave me a bottle to flush and keep the wound clean (would have been good at last app) but he used dissolvable stitches, is this correct for such a large dog on a high tension area?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Using dissolvable or non-dissolvable sutures would not cause an incision to open. Other factors like movement and infection would. It sounds like Kane had a surgical complication that can happen with any surgery. I’m sorry he’s going through this but continue the treatment the doctor recommended and it should heal with time. Kisses to Kane!
