Why is my overweight senior dog limping with hip lumps?

Hip dysplasia does not cause lumps or bumps. I would be concerned this is a tumor and I recommend to have her examined. Older dogs (just like people) are more prone to develop lumps/bumps and some of these can be cancerous. Older pets are also more prone to arthritis. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Without seeing Genesis it's hard to say. If the lumps are symmetric and soft, it is likely fatty subcutaneous tissue. Like "love handles" in people. Again, without seeing her I can't say that for sure but this is a common area where fat is stored on dogs and owners commonly are worried about it. The growths you are seeing on Pico can be unrelated to the lameness. It is not uncommon for older dogs to get arthritis similar to humans. They make several classes of medication to help with pain in older animals. It is worth consulting your vet to see which Pico is a candidate for to extend his quality of life.

Poor Dixie! Lipomas are fatty tumors, so if these lumps feel like they have fluid in them, then they are more likely cysts. As for her bad hips, the vet can prescribe her pain medications to help with those, which will likely make her feel and move a a lot better. I certainly wouldn't put her down if she had treatable problems. I would have Dixie seen by a vet tomorrow to discuss using pain medication for her hips, and to have her lumps diagnosed and possibly treated. I hope this helps :-)

Hello! As a large breed, older dog things like arthritis and hip dysplasia are definitely on the list of possible diagnoses. The lump may be a separate issue and not necessarily related to her favoring one leg. I recommend having Spirit examined by a veterinarian to observe her gait or walk, assess her range of motion, x-rays of the hips, and assess the mass and determine whether it is a contributing factor or separate issue. Unfortunately, with masses you cannot just look at them and say what they are. Ideally a biopsy should be preformed in order to get a definitive diagnosis. Your vet can preform a fine needle aspirate of the lump, but there is a chance that the sample is none diagnostic and you will end up needing to do a biopsy anyway. Although less invasive, FNA does not provide a definitive diagnosis, as only cells are evaluated. Hopefully this was helpful. I hope Spirit gets back to felling herself.

I don't see any photos attached to this post so I am not able to see the lump. If the lump is getting bigger than you should have him examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can do a needle aspirate to help diagnose and then your vet can recommend a treatment plan. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or your vet may want to remove the lump.

Please make an appointment to have Tammh seen by a vet as soon as possible. She is likely in pain, and may have a muscular or nerve injury, a fractured bone, a mass, or a foreign body in the leg.
