My hamster has a lump, but I can't afford a vet. What do I do?

You should take Graham to a veterinarian for an exam. This could be a tumor, an abscess or a cyst. The vet can find out which of the three it is. If the tumor is not too big, it can be removed. An abscess is easily treated (lanced and evacuated, flushed) and a cyst can easily be emptied as well. Do not wait too long with taking him to the vet, as tumors grow, and abscesses can cause really bad infections.

I think all the signs may be related to the lump. This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration).
