Why is my puppy so sick with vomiting, diarrhea after parvo shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 28 days old | 10.7 lbs

My puppy had a litter-mate that had parvo. It’s about 2 weeks since she’s been around the puppy with parvo and she’s tested negative for it. She just got her first round of shots a few days ago. Now she’s tired all the time, hardly eats and drinks, she threw up just to the smell of food, she has lost a lot of weight, has diarrhea, and throws up when she eats and drinks. She had some worms in her poop so we have her a dewormer/heart worm/flea pill from the vet but she’s thrown it up twice.

Poor Daisy! If she's vomiting, acting lethargic, and not wanting to eat or drink much, this is quite serious and she needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. I would recommend taking her in today for an exam. She may have an illness like parvo at this point, even if she tested negative recently - or she may have some other problem causing her current symptoms. Regardless of the underlying cause, these symptoms can be life-threatening in a puppy this age, so she needs veterinary care right away.

Poor Peaches! I'm sorry to hear that she isn't feeling well. Sleeping frequently is normal puppy behavior, but mild lethargy for a day or two can often be seen after vaccines, particularly in young puppies. However, vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence certainly are more concerning signs of a vaccine reaction. Some vaccine reactions can be delayed for up to a week. Other causes of vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy can include viruses, stomach upset from eating inappropriate food, foreign bodies, parasites, etc. Since she is so young and small, she should be assessed for dehydration and possibly started on antihistamines and corticosteroids if a vaccine reaction is suspected. I hope she feels better soon!

I am sorry to hear about Shooter. We can see some lethargy after a vaccination but severe lethargy/weakness in addition to vomiting are not normal side effects. I would recommend taking Shooter in to the nearest emergency vet for exam if he is still suffering from these symptoms.

Hi, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Tucker is displaying symptoms of parvo, so he needs to be tested as soon as possible so he can get treatment as early as he can. Other possibilities are parasites and recent food changes as well as some other viruses that tend to be less serious than parvo. Whatever the case may be, Tucker will need to see a veterinarian for diagnosis and supportive care to make it through his illness and for diagnosis, so please have him seen as soon as you can, ideally tonight. I hope this helps!
