What causes my rabbit's recurrent GI stasis, bloating, and gas pains?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 3.9 lbs

Mini-Rex, 20 months old, recurrent bloating/GI stasis. Past 2 weeks, 5 occasions associated with gas pains and loss of appetite. Each occasion treated with Empeprid (2ml) and Metacam (0.4ml). Symptoms subsided within 30 minutes of treatment. No underlying health condition identified. Normal eating habits, unlimited timothy hay, fresh greens once a day), occasional Pro-Fibre pellets and Fibreplex when eating less hay. Indoor rabbit, with a minimum of 6 hours free-roam. Currently shedding fur.

Thanks for reaching out about Jasper. Intestinal infections or parasites, metabolic disorder, inflammatory bowel disease, nutritional problems, food allergy-like conditions, are all possible. Diagnosis is difficult. Try leaving off vegetables and provide only hay for a few weeks. Additives to the pellets or treats could also be the culprit. An elimination diet is lengthy and time consuming, but probably the best strategy. Radiographs and blood work are probably recommended. Good luck.
