My dog is shedding and losing weight after puppies. What supplements?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 10 months old | 66 lbs

Can I get some vitamins and supplements suggested for a female dog who had her first litter 3 months ago ? She is having loads of shedding and weight is lost after the delivery. However after examining vet confirmed she is good health.

If she is healthy otherwise, try transitioning her to a puppy diet or high performance diet. Once she is at an appropriate weight, transition to a maintenance adult diet. A vitamin supplement, such at Pet-Tabs, can be used but as long as she is on a quality diet, she shouldn't need vitamin supplements. A fish oil supplement, such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps, can be used to promote healthy skin and coat. Use a monthly flea and tick preventative as well as a monthly parasite preventative. If her condition does not improve in the next month or two, have her rechecked by your veterinarian.

Hello. Any multivitamin would be appropriate, even a human One-A-Day. I would also put Snookie on a puppy food just because this contains the extra calories she may need to recover from having her puppies. It is not unusual for a dog to shed out her coat while nursing puppies, & in some cases, it can take several months for the coat to regrow. So, try a multivitamin & feed her a puppy food for a couple of months & she should look much better by springtime. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
