How can I get my scared indoor cat back inside after escaping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 years and 7 months old | 15 lbs

Hi, my cat Boots who is strictly an I door cat had escaped 1/21/20 and I been trying to get him back since. Last night he came to the bottom of my steps, seen I was looking through a window and took off. I waiting an hour, he returned, this time walked around the porch on the railing, took off again. I have safe traps set out with food, but he doesn't seem phased by it. Any tips on how to get him back inside where he belongs? Any help is appreciated.

You may try leaving tasty treats or very small amounts of food out on the steps/porch and lead them into the house (if you can leave the door open so he walks in. You can also sit quietly outside with something tasty to encourage him to come to you. Be patient and quiet. Most pets will get hungry enough that they will try to over come their fears. I hope this helps and good luck.
