My 8-month-old dog is always thirsty and peeing a lot. What's wrong?

Ideally, dogs should be drinking 1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight per day. So Damon should be drinking at least 40oz of water per day. You would have to measure out the amount of water he is taking in to determine if he is drinking too much or too little. If he is drinking too much water, this could be an indication of some type of systemic disease such as kidney disease, diabetes insipidus, psychogenic / behavioral, diabetes mellitus, etc. If he is indeed taking in too much water then I would recommend having his blood tested to rule out the above causes. This could just be behavioral, in which case it is not going to hurt him drinking this much. It may be a nuisance to you but in reality, it will not hurt him. I would measure his water intake and if you determine that he is drinking excessive amounts, take him in to see a veterinarian for further testing to help determine why his thirst is increased.

I am sorry to hear about Scooter. If he weights 30 pounds the maximum amount of water he can consume that is considered "normal" for his size is about 5 and 1/4 cups. If he is drinking more than this at the weight of 30 pounds I would recommend bringing him to the vet for examination. There are many possible causes of increased thirst and urination including diabetes, kidney disease, cushing's disease (an endocrine disorder), urinary tract diseases, and more. They vet will examine him and likely recommend bloodwork and urinalysis to screen for possible causes.

Young dogs are usually very healthy and do not commonly have issues like excessive drinking and peeing. These can be signs of an underlying issue like diabetes, Cushing's disease, or a urinary tract infection. Since Paco is showing some abnormal symptoms I would recommend taking him to your vet. Am increase in thirst or urination, especially in an older pet, may indicate a degree of kidney disease. Other potential causes include infection and behavioral issues (psychogenic polydipsia). As long as he is behaving normally, you can wait to see your veterinarian. Schedule an appointment in the morning. Your veterinarian may recommend blood work to assess major organ function. Afterwards, xrays of the abdomen or an ultrasound may be done to further assess the kidneys and bladder.

Poor guy! He certainly sounds sick. Drinking and urinating excessively can be due to underlying disease like diabetes, kidney disease (chronic or acute due to infection), or Cushing's disease. The fact that he is also having more trouble walking around is concerning for arthritis (chronic osteoarthritis or acute immune-mediated conditions) as well as tick borne diseases, such as lyme disease. Lyme disease can also affect the kidneys. If your dog has not yet had some blood testing to rule out diabetes and kidney disease, consider discussing this with your vet. Depending on your location, leptospirosis and tick borne diseases can also be of concern, so also discuss this with your vet to determine if testing for infectious diseases is warranted.

About an ounce per pound per day is the upper limit of normal. If she is drinking more than this then I would recommend that she be seen by your veterinarian for blood work and urinalysis to help define the problem such as diabetes, kidney disease, and cancer among others. Excessive urination and drinking are often signs of unregulated blood sugar that is too high (meaning not enough insulin). That being said, I would never adjust your dog's insulin dosage without first consulting with a vet and understanding how to treat hypoglycemia if needed. You can discuss at home testing of the urine or blood to determine your dog's blood sugar levels.

A healthy dog should not drink more than 60ml water/kg (2.2lbs) body weight/24hrs. So if your dog weighs 22lbs, he should not drink more than 600ml per 24 hours. If your dog drinks significantly more than that, then something is wrong. Since Coper is a very old dog, this could be a sign of kidney disease, Cushing's disease or diabetes. If it's a warm day out, or he just exercised, it's normal that he would be thirsty. A dog normally drinks 50-60ml per kg of bodyweight, so without knowing Reminton's weight, I can't say for sure if he is drinking an excessive amount. I would weight him, convert his weight to kg (divide his weight by 2.2), and multiple that number by 60 to get the number of mL he should be drinking per day. If he is drinking more than that, then that isn't normal, and I would take him into a vet for an exam.
