Is it normal for my 2-year-old cat to still nurse from her mother?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 10 months old

hello! i have an issue with my 2 female cats. one is the mother and the other her baby. but that baby will be 2 years old in March. she somehow is still nursing??? not sure how even. Stella doesn’t push Ellie away at all and they sit and purr and she gets cleaned and everything. i’m just wondering if i should be concerned? is she still producing milk if she’s nursing? her nipples don’t look bad but i’m concerned. i cant stop them all the time either.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like this is a calming behavior for Ellie. Stella isn’t producing milk anymore. There is no concern unless Ellie is causing trauma to Stellas nipples. If not then it sounds like both cats are happy! Kisses to Stella and Ellie!
