How can I harden my dog’s stool? I feed my dog Kirkland signature dog food and have been feeding her for 5 days nutrivet digestive supplement canned pumpkin. I add it to her food about one tablespoon with a cup of dog food. Her poop seems to be getting kinda soggy and is soft. Do I keep on feeding and maybe it will harden? Or what other foods might help with her stool?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bella. There is usually a medical reason for soft stool. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. Fecal testing may be needed and possibly bloodwork. Parasites and diet are the most common causes of diarrhea or soft stool in young dogs. It may be that her current diet does not agree with her. Her breed, however, is prone to a condition known as exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. I hope this information helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Soft stools are not necessarily an issue if it is just soft as it is not likely that he will become dehydrated from it. However, an easy thing you can do is add a tablespoon of canned pumpkin to his meals which can help with soft stools. You can also consider adding probiotics such as Fortiflora. If it becomes diarrhea, it would be recommended to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

You can try a veterinary probiotic. There are several on the market such as FortiFlora or ProViable. Find them in your local pet store or veterinary clinic. Plain, canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) can also be used as a source of dietary fiber and may help firm up stool. Mix in a teaspoon or two with each meal. If Bentley still has soft stool, submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites, bacterial overgrowth or maldigestion/malabsorption issues. You can also discuss food allergies, allergy testing and food elimination trials with your veterinarian.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Winnie is having soft stools, despite a bland diet. I recommend adding in a 1/2 teaspoon of Metamucil (original, unflavored) powder to her meals twice daily. This is an over-the-counter fiber supplement that can help bulk up stools. If the soft stool continues with these therapies, she should be seen by a veterinarian as a more serious problem could be present. Causes of soft stool include gastrointestinal parasites, liver disease, colitis, etc. I hope this is helpful!
