My dog might have swallowed a ring. How long until it comes out?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 81 lbs

My black lab may have swallowed a gold ring yesterday morning. It was on my bathroom sink. I took a shower and noticed it was gone when I went to put it back on. So I’m not positive if he really swallowed it, but I have no idea where it went. If he did swallow it, how long could it take for it to come out? I checked his stool this morning, but it wasn’t there. I just wanted to know when I should give up looking. Something I read said it could be up to a month. I hope not!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buddy. I recommend taking him to see his veterinarian for x-rays. This will confirm whether or not he ate the ring. If so, you can monitor the stool. If not, then you will not need to worry about it. Intestinal transit time can vary greatly. It could pass today or tomorrow or it could be a long time. It will easier if you know it is in there or not. I hope this information helps!
