Is it normal for a dog to shiver and bleed after having puppies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 9 months old

My dog had puppies a little over 24hrs ago. She was in labor from around midnight until approximately 530am. She delivered 9 pups all alive and look healthy. She started shivering this morning when I took her out of whelping box, and I noticed some blood in whelping box that wasn't there last night, should I be worried?

While shivering can be normal occasionally it can also be a sign of pain or fever. It could also be seen with a low calcium level. I’d recommend having your vet take a look at Cocoa - they can take her temperature and determine if she seems painful. Some blood can be normal for awhile but they can also look at the discharge from her vulva and make sure there are no signs of infection. They might recommend some blood work.
