My large dog ate garlic bread. Should I worry about garlic toxicity?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old

My dog ate half a garlic bread naan. I've read garlic is toxic for dogs. He is a great Dane, weighs 56kg. And probably ate a hand size of the bread. Should I be worried? Thanks.

This is likely not enough garlic to pose a serious risk of toxicity. At worst, you may see some mild stomach upset. Withhold food for 24 hours and feed a bland diet in small, frequent amount until symptoms resolve.

Given Roxy's weight and the amount she ate, it may not be toxic to her, but as little as a clove of garlic can prove to be toxic to dogs. I would monitor her for signs of toxicity, which include drooling, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain, increased heart rate, weakness, exercise intolerance, collapse, and pale gums. It can take up to a couple of days for signs of garlic toxicity to show, so I monitor her for at least four days. If she shows any signs of toxicity, take her into a vet immediately. In the future, I would make sure Roxy doesn't eat anything with garlic in it.
