My fancy rat died suddenly. What caused nose and mouth blood?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Female | unspayed | 0.75 lbs

Hi, My fancy rat died, she was eating, drinking and behaving normally the day before. She was found curled up in her bed with blood or porphyrin all around her nose and mouth. I have her sister still with me and I'm worried that if I dont know why she died then I cant make sure her sister doesnt have the same experience. I have looked everywhere for answers; I really need your help, please... I didnt take any photos because it was too upsetting for me. Thank you, Meg Franzen

Sorry for your loss. By the description, respiratory collapse is likely, probably mycoplasma. Respiratory difficulty can lead to cardiac arrest. A necropsy at a veterinary office can give more answers.
