My cat on prednisolone has GI issues. Is it safe to lower his dose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi. My cat has been on a high dose of prednisolone for over 3 months and has begun to eat less, vomit, and show some other symptoms consistent with possible GI trouble. He has an appointment with an internal-med specialist next Tuesday, but in the meantime I'm wondering if I should cut his prednisolone dose in half. (This is the proper way to taper it: my vet had tried it before, but brought the dose back up again when the cat didn't respond as well to the decreased amount.)

Hello. This is a reasonable thing to do, but please discuss this with your veterinarian first. Your vet has all the particulars on your cat's condition, so for me just to say its OK to start cutting back on a medication without having any information on why the medication was started in the first place would not be right & may be harmful to your pet.
