Dog straining before diarrhea, but eating and playing. Is this normal?

My dog is straining a little bit before she has diarrhea.? She's eating and playing. I have her on rice with a bit of chicken in it to help calm her tummy. She doesn't seem to be in pain I was squishing her tummy around. She is gassy when she poops. But other then the diarrhea she seems normal. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 16 days old | 70 lbs

Straining is common with diarrhea caused by colitis, and as long as you’re not seeing blood and Athena is eating normally and not vomiting I wouldn’t be too concerned. If the diarrhea doesn’t resolve in the next couple of days you should plan to see your vet.
