Dog straining before diarrhea, but eating and playing. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 16 days old | 70 lbs

My dog is straining a little bit before she has diarrhea.? She's eating and playing. I have her on rice with a bit of chicken in it to help calm her tummy. She doesn't seem to be in pain I was squishing her tummy around. She is gassy when she poops. But other then the diarrhea she seems normal.

Straining is common with diarrhea caused by colitis, and as long as you’re not seeing blood and Athena is eating normally and not vomiting I wouldn’t be too concerned. If the diarrhea doesn’t resolve in the next couple of days you should plan to see your vet.
