My dog is on a renal diet. Can my healthy dog eat it too?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Old English Sheepdog | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 70 lbs

I have two dogs, ages 2 and 4. The 2 year old needs to be on a renal diet. Is it okay that my 4 year old eats the same diet with healthy kidneys?

Aww, they are a pretty adorable pair! The short answer is, 'yes," that is fine. This will not harm your other dog to be on long term as well. The longer answer is that if he is a working dog, or is a very athletic dog (regularly goes for 3+mile runs, does agility, etc) then a less protein restricted maintenance diet would be better for him. Thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
