My dog has open, swelling rib wounds. How do I stop him licking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 6 months and 26 days old | 25 lbs

My dog has open wounds, I am not sure how he got them. They were on his rib part. The other wounds on his ribs are now scabs but the bigger wounds were still swelling. He keeps on licking the wounds together with our other dog.

Ideally, he should be physically examined by a veterinarian. Antibiotics may be indicated. IN the meantime, place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking. Keep him separate from the other dog if possible. A small t-shirt may help prevent all licking if a cone or separation are not possible.
