My cat's GGT is high. Does diet or a recent meal affect blood work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Korat | Male | neutered | 15 years and 11 months old | 9.2 lbs

Hi, I'd like a 2nd opinion on Beau's CBC. He has high GGT but the vet dismissed it. His T4 is 1.1. Kidney values are steady. Since the last CBC, he has stopped a low dosage of prednisolone and started Flovent for bronchitis. Also he started subQ fluids. Could diet affect GGT, such as high fat content, or fish oil? He ate a small meal right before the blood test. Could these things have caused the spike in GGT? He is acting normally and eating well. Thank you for your time.

Lab values can be influenced by a recent meal if there is fat present in the blood (lipemia), but the values affected depend on the way the blood machine works. Diet usually doesn't affect GGT significantly. That being said an elevation in GGT alone wouldn't necessarily concern me - I would probably recommended rechecking in a few weeks.
