My degu fell and has concussion symptoms. What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My Degu fell from a large height... He was passed out immediately after but has slowly come too. He shows signs of what I imagine to be concussion; loss of balance, disorientation, lethargy... My hope is that, as with human concussion, he will importune over the next week but I'm unsure if head trauma in rodents will see the same recovery, are you able to advise?

Thanks for reaching out about your degu. If he remains ataxic and disoriented, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Anti-inflammatory medications might be needed, but what if he has internal damage that needs a different treatment plan. Provide a warm, quiet, dark place to recover. Ensure he is eating and drinking. Also, check incisors as when these rodents fall they often damage their front teeth. Good luck.
