Why is my new cat hiding under the bed and hissing after moving?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 11 lbs

My new cat I got 4 days ago was really sweet when we got him. I locked him in my bathroom and when i go in there he would rub against me and be outgoing. but as soon as I let him in my bedroom, he darts to under my bed and wont come out at all. Occasionally he will jump out and zoom around my room but thats it and will go back under. Just last night i was petting him under my bed and he hissed and scratched me. I came back after 30 mins and he hissed at me again with out me looking at him

Sounds like Chunky might be a bit overwhelmed by his new environment. I'd put him back in the bathroom with a Feliway pheromone diffuser for another week or two and then try a reintroduction to the rest of the house. It can be pretty scary for a cat who feels cornered to see an arm reaching toward it, so this might be why he was hissing. If he seems to be hissing when he's back in the bathroom you can try slowly getting him used to being around you and being touched by feeding him canned food for meals while gently petting him.
