Why is my puppy's body swollen and not growing? What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 24 days old

Hi, my puppy’s body is swollen because it was suddenly fed with a large supply of dog breast milk. The arms and body is constantly swelling up, and it doesnt seem like it is growing. What do i do? The photo below shows the swollen puppy (left) and a puppy of same age. What should i do? Will it keep growing at this rate?

Hello, sorry to hear about Koopi. That swelling and lack of growth is not likely associated with eating too much too quickly. I would be more concerned that your puppy could have a congenital abnormality where his lack of growth could be associated to an abnormal hear condition or a liver shunt or perhaps a heavy burden of parasites. I would recommend having your puppy evaluated by a veterinarian to ensure there are no underlying issues with him. Hope this helps and best of luck.
