What results should I expect from Azodyl for my cat's kidney disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 20 years old | 9.5 lbs

Hi I’ve just started giving tony a Vetoquinol Azodyl supplement for kidney health. What kind of physical results should I see, if any, and should it show any improvement in his renal values next time I take him to my vet for labwork? He’s also just started taking a triglyceride omega 3 Iiquid supplement. He won’t eat any of the Rx kidney diets available so I’m trying these things in hopes of helping his early kidney disease. Thanks

Hello. Azodyl is a probiotic/prebiotic that the company claims to work by "enteric dialysis". This means a waste product called urea is cleaned up in the gut thus making less available for circulation. This supposedly makes it easier for the kidneys to function by reducing azotemia & uremia in chronic renal failure. There is little clinical evidence at this time to support the companies claims. This product will not harm the kidneys, but you will not see significant changes in Tony's overall condition or blood work. I think you may see more benefit from the omega 3 supplement than anything else. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
