My puppy has a strange stomach growth. Could it be a histiocytoma?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chesapeake Bay Retriever | Male | unneutered | 7 months old | 50 lbs

Posted this a few days ago, but it has changed some so wanted to see if anyone has seen something like this. We took him to the vet last week they put us on a week of steroids (previously posted that it was an antibiotic, sorry) and medical wipes. Today is day 6 of both of them. We are making him another appointment tomorrow. He pays no attention to this and is fine if we touch it. Our vet said she has never seen this before. It is located on his stomach.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From the picture and the age of Oakley I would be suspicious of a histiocytoma. These are common but benign (not cancerous) growths on young dogs. They show up quickly and looks angry but they go away on their own in 3-4 months. Sometimes they cause the pet to scratch at them and need to be surgically removed but most of the time they cause no concerns. I would ask your vet to confirm this with an aspirate (or cells) taken from the growth. Good luck and kisses to Oakley!
