Guinea pig hay allergy: What can my piggy eat instead of dusty hay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | 2.5 lbs

My husband found out his allergy source is coming from timothy hay for our guinea pig. I tried switching to orchard hay but my piggy doesn't like it. Can I substitute the actual hay for anything else to give him the proper nutrients like timothy cubes or something? apparently its the dust the hay makes that hes allergic to

Sorry for your dilemma. Timothy hay, orchard grass or bermuda grass are suitable for a diet, but agree that some are not favored by all animals. Hay cubes should be the equivalence of hay. You can also try shaking the dust from the hay outdoors and then offer to Sammy. But high fiber hay is an essential part of the guinea pigs diet. Good luck.
