Why is my goldfinch tail bobbing and acting sick? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Canary | Male

Hello, I have an European Goldfinch. He's 1 year and 4 months old. Right after his moulding in September 2019, he started to be tired, had lots of appetite and being fluffy all the day. Even though it's winter, temperatures aren't that low. The goldfinch won't sing and sometimes he goes in the bottom of the aviary looking for seeds, even though he has plenty in his dispenser. Also, while he breathes, his tale is bobbing. What should I do? Should I give him medicine? Can you define what he has?

Thanks for reaching out about Samson. Tail bobbing is often associated with respiratory problems and increased effort to breath in. This could be a bacterial, viral or fungal infection, enlarged organ (liver, spleen) or other problems. A veterinary visit is highly recommended. Providing heat support can give some aid but should not be in lieu of a veterinary visit. Good luck.
