My dog has an ear infection. How to give medicine to a scared dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 50 lbs

My girl had a vet appointment today and she has an ear infection. She freaked out previously when we tried cleaning it with basic cleaner and she freaked out on the vet when he tried swabbing it to run the test. He gave us a sedative for her but after that she was terrified and not walking right and tried to climb on a kitchen shelf to hide. We were unable to use the medicine. How can we get her the ear medicine she needs without her being so scared she is freaking out and shaking?

Poor Sansa! How stressful for all of you. There are ear medications that can be administered at the vet's office, that work on their own for up to two weeks without you needing to do anything with the ears at home. We use them frequently at our clinic, because many dogs with sore, painful ears will not allow them to be handled at home! I would recommend calling your vet to let them know that you aren't able to adminster the meds at home, and asking about a long-acting option like Claro or BNT ointment. Even if they don't carry these meds normally, they may be able to order them for you, and you can bring her back to their office to have them apply the medication if needed.
