My dog's urine test shows 1+ epithelial cells. What does it mean?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 9 years and 2 months old | 10.5 lbs

My dog, Cookie, has 1+ (1/2)/HPF for epithelial cells from IDEXX urinalysis. What does that mean? Is that a normal reading? Please advise. Thank you.

As long as the epithelial cells didn't look suspicious for cancer, this is a non-significant finding and nothing to be worried about. : ) Cells come off of the bladder normally in pets and can be detected at low levels around 1+ in the urine. Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Take care : )
