My dog has grade 2 luxating patella. What to do to avoid surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 30 days old | 7 lbs

Yesterday my pup was dx w/luxating patella. Though, the vet did not specify the urgency of surgery she stated if not done it could lead to major pain and arthritis. According to the luxating patella ref. My pup would be categorized as grade 2. What can I do to prevent the stages to progress? I am trying to avoid surgery. If he was in fact stage 3/4 would no surgery indicate broken leg or unfunction leg?

Often a dog with a grade 2 luxating patella never progresses to grade 3 or 4, but over time the luxating patella can lead to arthritis in the knee or increase risk for rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament. Grade 3 and 4 dogs can still walk but tend to develop arthritis early. I find some grade 2 dogs do well and don’t develop arthritis until much later in life while others have progressive symptoms. Talk to your vet about wanting to avoid surgery and see what they recommend.
