My dog's bite wound is swollen. Is it infected? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered

My dog was in a fight three days ago. Thought there was no harm but on return from the walk I noticed he had a bite to his cheek. Seemed to be healing and dog appears fine in himself. Today i sent him to daycare (which I regret) and I think through playing the wound has got worse and now his face is really swollen. I'm booking vet appt tomorrow but is there anything else I should do. Is it likely to be infected and what would the likely treatment. I'm worried its serious .

Hello. Many bite wounds can lie quiet for a couple of days until an infection sets in. Then, things seem to get worse in a short period of time. Once your vet gets the area cleaned up & antibiotics are started, Alfie should heal very quickly. In the meantime, you can try applying warm compresses to the swollen cheek. The water should be quite warm & if you can do this for 5-10 minutes a couple of times a day until his appointment, this will be helpful.
