How cold is too cold for an Australian Shepherd to be outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 70 lbs

My brother and I disagree about if it's safe to leave our Australian Shepherd outside in cold weather. He thinks the dog will get used to the cold (like a sled dog, etc) and taking him inside lowers his "cold resistance." I think that if it is below 32 and/or the dog is showing signs of being cold (shivering, cold ears) then it's not safe. What worries me the most is that he has a doghouse, but refuses to use it so he really doesn't have a place to get warm. Who is right/how cold is too cold?

Hello, the Australian Shepherd dog is actually a herding working breed. It is not recognized as an arctic breed such as a Huskie. Therefore Aussies cold tolerance is not as good as an arctic breed. In general, if it is too cold outside for you, then its too cold outside for your dog. Their thick coat will help keep them warm some, however, it would not be ideal to keep your dog outside in 32 degree weather as this is close to freezing. Hope this helps and best of luck.
