My dog won't eat his kibble after vomiting. Is he afraid of it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 3 years and 9 months old | 97 lbs

My dog was sick and vomiting a lot and we went to the vet to get him treated. He's acting pretty normal now, but seems afraid to eat his regular kibble. He eats it fine when I soften it with warm water, or give him chicken and rice, but he will not eat it as he usually does which is a bit worrying since he never had an issue before. Is there any chance he could feel scared to eat his kibble now that he's been sick from it?

Hello, sorry to hear about Cooper. Theres a chance he is sore from his vomiting and/or he got used to eating a soft diet that this is what he prefers currently. I would give him a week or so to allow everything to settle and see if he return to his normal behavior. It would be rare that a dog would make a connection between its food and vomiting. I think Cooper will return to his normal self in a few days. Hope this helps and best of luck.
