My dog's anal glands are full, fishy smell, why no expression?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Belgian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 58 lbs

Bella has shown some signs of anal glands that are full. She licks her behind and there is a fishy smell as well. She doesn’t seem to have difficulty pooping but does sit uncomfortably. I’m not sure why her glands aren’t expressing since I changed her diet and poop seems normal.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bella. I recommend that she sees her veterinary office to have her glands expressed. Some dogs need to have this done regularly so that glands do not become overly full. I hope this information helps!
