My dog is limping and tucking leg. What can I do before the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Female | spayed | 150 lbs

My dog and I went on a long walk yesterday and when we got home she seemed fine. My friends bigger dog later pushed her off of what she was standing on and she yelled really loud and wouldn’t let me touch her. She currently is tucking her leg in, but will lightly put it down when she eats or drinks for support. My vet isn’t in until Tuesday. What can I do until then? She has no swelling, no cuts, no lumps or bumps.

Poor Leia. I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

I'm sorry Lucy has a leg injury! I'm not sure if she has a wound or if she is limping with no obvious sign of a wound. I would rest her. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to potty on a lead only and bring her right back in when she's done. Do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dog and can be fatal if given. Have her seen by a vet. The vet can treat the injury and give medication as needed. I hope this helps!
