Why is my cat's tail base painful with yellow discharge & odor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 7 lbs

my cat has had pain in the base of the tail for a few days, had some yellow leakage from anus the day before yesterday. Yesterday she had what appeared to be an abcess pop at the base of the tail just above the anus, foul odor, yellow discharge. It had two holes that was opened. Now today it looks like the two open areas became one and there seems to be a new one on the left lateral side of the base of tail/buttocks area.

Hello, sorry to hear about Comet. It sounds like he has an abscessed area wether at the tail or anus. Some pets may develop impacted anal glands that become infected and turn into anal gland abscesses. I would recommend having Comet evaluated by a veterinarian as this infection will need to be treated with antibiotics and the area will need to be cleaned. I hope this helps and best of luck.
