My red-eared slider hatchling's shell is discolored; why won't it bask?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi. I own a Red eared slider turtle that hatched about a month ago. I am worried about its shell health. On the top of its shell is a yellowish line and theres a grey border around its costal shells. Is it shell rot or other type of health issue or just shedding? Is it normal for my turtle to mostly be at the filter? I had it for 3 weeks and he stil isnt basking. He has no problem eating pellet or worms. Do I have to worry about his health or am I overreacting? It has the things to be healthy

Thanks for reaching out about your aquatic turtle. Water temperature needs to be kept warm for nutrient absorption. Without pictures, it is difficult to assess the shell. Insects are important for these young animals but all worms/insects need to be gut loaded for nutrients, as otherwise are bags of fat. High calcium levels are important for shell strength. Good luck.
