Is Orbax antibiotic safe for my cat's UTI? Retinal damage risk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 9.5 lbs

In reading risks of Fluoroquinolones antibiotics, isn't Orbax somewhat risky? It mentions on the box it's not to be used in feed animals and doesn't seem to be used in human medicine? My kitty is on it for a UTI, and I'm concerned about retinal damage but my vet isn't open for 3 days. How common is feline retinal damage with this antibiotic?

Hello. I am so sorry that your question has gone unanswered for so long. As long as the antibiotic is used at the prescribed dose & for the prescribed time, there is very little chance of retinal damage occurring in Echo. Orbax has been available for many years & was in fact developed to address the retinal issue seen with some other fluoroquinolones. It is a good & safe antibiotic for cats. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
