Why is my guinea pig making sounds, has red ears, and feels warm?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered | 2.5 lbs

My pet Carmello, has just now started making sound that are like a “k” sound. He did it two times just now. I picked him up and set him in my arms, and then he didn’t do it again. So I am not sure what it is. His ears are a little red and he feels really warm. We got him new food today that was suggested by a friend. I will show the picture of the packaged food.

Thanks for reaching out about Carmello and including photos (but pictures do not show any problems). Upper and lower respiratory infections are common and can cause congestion (sounds). Heart disease is not uncommon in middle aged/older guinea pigs also. A veterinary visit would be a good idea. Warm ears could be an indication of a fever. Monitor food and water intake, monitor noises and see if you can locate to a certain area or situation. Good luck.
