Why is my dog limping and her rear swollen? Is it anal glands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 52 lbs

My dog's is walking with a limp. It looks to be that her butt or her privates are a bit swollen. I did not know if expressing her anal glands would be helpful? My question is what does it look like to you and how should I treat it?

I can't see any obvious swelling on the pictures, not something i would attribute to the limping anyway. anal gland expressing can only help if the anal glands are very full. If the limping has just started you can let her rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take her to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, she might need pain killers for a few days. if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well.

No anal gland irritation wouldn't cause limping. Since you're getting so many different opinions, I'd recommend going to an orthopedic specialist if at all possible. If not, try the completely resting and see if that helps.
