My cat has struvite crystals and won't eat his special food. Help!

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 10 lbs

my male cat has struvite crystals and has been plugged 3 times in last 2 years(he adopted us and looks to be 3yrs old) He has to have special diet but won't eat it.He loves other canned food mixed with water but turns nose up at s/d food. I'm afraid he's going to block again before the struvite crystals can dissolve. HELP! What can I flavor this food with so he[ll eat?

You can try warming it up or mixing in a tiny bit of plain baby food. Since Gabby does have a history of urinary obstructions, discuss surgical options with your veterinarian. A perineal urethrostomy (PU) can be performed to widen the opening through which he urinates to prevent blocking.

    If Barfi is obstructed and cannot urinate, this constitutes an emergency and should be addressed by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Urinary obstructions can lead death if not treated in a timely fashion. I would get to a veterinarian as soon as you are able to.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Spooky. I do not recommend mixing over-the-counter food with his prescription urinary diet as this will negate its effects. To increase the moisture content of his diet, you can add water to his dry kibble. Some cats will eat it that way if they will not eat the canned food. The other option would be to try to another brand of prescription wet food. I hope this information helps!

Redneck has bladder stones. He will not eat hills diet so is now on fus-sol drops and hills urinary care dry food along with sheba wet food. 8 days in and he seems to be relapsing. What is our next option?
Surgery may be the next option if he won't eat the prescription diet. Discuss other diets, both canned and dry, with your veterinarian first. It may take several weeks to months to fully dissolve any stones or crystals. Try to get him to drink as much water as possible to dilute his urine.

I would suggest you supplement him with a critical care diet like this one. There are many different ways you can mix it up and make it for him. Most cats like the taste. This is a great diet because it is packed with calories and nutrients so they don't have to each much to get the proper amount of calories. You may have to force feed him until he is feeling better. There are many YouTube videos on how to do this. You will need to get some large syringes from your vet or you can get them on Amazon. One of our male cats recdently had a blockage and we had to take him to emergency. We got there in the nick of time, he was going into kidney failure! Naturally he now has to be on special prescription food. The Hill's c/d he doesn't like at all.
I would feed him the Royal Canin dry SO if he likes it. It's important that he eats the urinary diet, and you can add water to it to get more moisture into his diet. I also recommend getting him a pet water fountain. It's provides a continual source of fresh water, and encourages cats to drink. I have one for my cats, and they love it! I hope this helps!

So I took my cat to an ER, apparently he has a blockage which is why he couldn’t pee. He’s in surgery right now but I want to know what kind of food do I feed my cat after surgery so that the blockage won’t happen again.
Moving forward, you will need to feed Frodo a prescription diet for cats who have urinary problems. I recommend Royal Canin S/O. These diets are formulated to promote increased drinking and urination. They also affect the urine pH to prevent the formation of crystals and one type of bladder stone. You will want to have his urine checked at least twice a year for infections and crystals until you know things are stable. I've got my fingers crossed for you and Frodo!

I would strongly advise against this. I would keep him on some form of food labelled for urinary crystal prevention. Urinary blockages can be a fatal emergency. Royal Canin, Hills, and Purina ProPlan are the three foods that use the most science in their nutrition. I have never heard of young again. Any of their foods that are labelled "S/O" are meant to prevent the formation of urinary crystals. Many urinary diets do have an increased caloric amount, and I sympathize that can be a struggle, but it is related to what keeps their urinary tracts healthy. You can try feeding canned food that is watered down to lower some calories. The extra water and hydration is great for the urinary tract as well. Feeding the food out of toys and feeders, instead of bowls in meals, to encourage their working for food and hunting behaviors can also help with their food intake.

If your cat is losing weight on 65 grams /day then you need to feed her a bit more. She also needs to drink a lot of water, if possible, so put the water bowl about 2m plus away from the food as cats do not like to drink water near their food. Do not feed milk to your cat. Cats often are lactose -intolerant and get diarrhea from milk. The pan medication probably tastes terrible which is why she foams and spits it out. Okay so my cat has been diagnosed with bladder stones and so they gave us UTI diet food to give him and medicine twice a day i give him the medicine and the food but the food he doesn't eat, he doesn't urinate either, or drinks water he doesn't see
I would recommend that you have Milo examined by a vet immediately. Lack of urination in a cat diagnosed with bladder stones can indicate blockage or severe kidney damage, and this is a medical emergency. Sometimes you have to try a couple different brands of the prescription food for urinary disease to find which one a cat will like. But this is a secondary issue to the fact that he isn't producing urine right now.

Hi tony eats a hills kd chicken Rx canned diet. He often gets tired of it and I switch to other kidney diets but when that no longer works I top his food with a little baby food (pic below) and he seems to enjoy the taste and will lick the bowl clean
The most important thing with cats is that they continue to eat, so indulging him occasionally with baby food is okay. You may also try warming his food a little before feeding, adding some low-sodium chicken broth, also increasing his liquid intake, adding just water and making more of a gruel, or some combination.
