My dog is in pain and sick after his parvo vaccine. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 45 lbs

Hi I have a 2 and a half year old Staffordshire bull terrier and he had his yearly parvo vaccine last Friday. We had to give him some sedative drugs so he behaved while at vet, 4 for his size. They did not really work until later on that night. He was wobbly on his feet and had red eyes and really out of it for at least 24 hours. He has been depressed looking, barely eating his food. But still eating some food, he vomited 2 days ago and crying a high pitched cry when he gets up and lays down.

Hello, sorry to hear about Rocky. It sounds like he may be having some pain at the vaccination site. These can vary between animals but it may be why he is seemingly painful. Additionally, like humans some dogs may become ill from their vaccines. It is important to note this for the future when your dog goes to get vaccines again so that they may elect to spread out his vaccines and prevent future reactions. Given that Rocky has been feeling ill for a week now, I would recommend having him evaluated by his veterinarian today as he may need pain medications, bloodwork, and some medical supportive care to make him feel better. Hope this helps and best of luck.
