Why can't my dog open his eye? It's lighter and he has cherry eye.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

my dog had the cherry eye for awhile now. I woke up this morning and saw that he seemed to not be able to open his right eye. So I don’t know if it’s anything serious? Also it seems to be a lighter color than usual.

Your pup is experiencing anisocoria. There are many potential causes and I recommend to have your pup examined today: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/anisocoria-in-dogs It's possible he is in pain (that's why he doesn't want to open the eye). The veterinarian may need to put a dye in his eye to look for a scratch. Other diagnostics may also be recommended pending the physical exam findings. I hope this helps and that he feels better quickly.
