How to treat my cat's burn wound and prevent infection at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | European Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 11 days old | 4 lbs

I accidentally burn my cat while boiling water for tea, she’s lost a lot of fur and it it’s raw and I want to know what I can do to prevent infection and help her heal. She doesn’t seem to be in any pain because when I touch the wound (with clean hands) she doesn’t mind at all. Please help :( I can’t afford a vet.

Hello, sorry to hear about Cleo. It does look like the burn skin is sloughing off. Unfortunately, infection is always going to be a potential risk even when on medications. It is best to keep the area clean and can treat the area topically with any over the counter ointments such as Neosporin if your primary care veterinarian recommends it. You can monitor the area for any discharge, bleeding, foul smell, and pain. If you note any of these then you should have her evaluated sooner. You can place an e-collar (cone) one her to ensure she is not licking at the area as this can make it more likely for her to develop and infection. Hope this helps and best of luck.
