My dog limps after jumping and holds her paw up. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 7 years and 7 months old | 9 lbs

Our dog is occasionally limping. I notice she does this when she jumps to hard on it. But she will walk with her paw held up. She doesn’t whine when I touch her arm/paw and she will apply pressure to it here and there. Nothing feels out of place or swollen. Should I take her to a vet or what can I do to help her not walk with her paw lifted up?

If this has been ongoing a while, or happened after jumping off a tall item such as a couch, I would bring her to the vet. They can check for issues such as sprains, ligament tears, sore joints (arthritis) etc that could be causing the limp, and provide medications or joint supplements as needed. Limiting her activity and preventing jumping by providing pet ramps or stairs can also help reduce further injury.
