Why is my senior chihuahua's eye tearing and closing after drops?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Female | spayed

My 11 year old chihuahua was experiencing vision issues that looked most closely to nuclear sclerosis.. We began using CanC drops - (2 drops in ea eye daily) that some use for cataracts. My thinking was that they might help even as antioxidant support. We have used them close to 30 days.. A couple days ago I noticed one eye tearing and she now is moslty keeping eyes closed... What might you suggest that we could do to help her?

I'd recommend having Siena examined by your vet. It's possible that she has cataracts and not nuclear sclerosis and cataracts can sometimes cause inflammation in the eye. She could also have conjunctivitis or a scratch on the eye unrelated to the changes in her lenses and the drops. I would discontinue the drops until you can see your vet.
