My cat is stressed. Can stress cause a UTI or bladder infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 9.5 lbs

Can a stressful experience cause a bacterial UTI? My 1yr 8month old cat had shots (steroid + antibiotic) did not react well (aggressive, panting, ripped out fur), and 10 days later developed a UTI while on a all wet food diet. Could the stress from the wayward visit/reaction have contributed to developing this? She was pretty depressed/lethargic for the week after and at times went almost all day no pee (she is peeing fine now).

A stressful event can allow for cystitis and potentially this could allow a further bacterial infection to develop. I hate to hear Echo is having these issues! I recommend to have her examined and checked for a bladder infection. Make sure her reaction is noted in her files to avoid this since it sounds like it really stressed out her body. I hope this helps.
