My dog has a level 4 heart murmur. Do I need to see a cardiologist?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 6 years and 2 months old | 15 lbs

My dog is 6 years old and I was just informed she has a level 4 heart murmur. Her father died of heart failure at age 9, does this mean she also has heart failure? What do you recommend should be my next step? Cardiologist or 2nd opinion or both?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ava Bleu. I recommend following up with a cardiologist. This will help you decide if she needs to be on medications. Approximately 10% of dogs with a heart murmur will progress to heart failure. However, the cardiologist will given you more specifics given her exact condition. I hope this information helps!
